OUR STORY
Ukhwi O Qhuqhayo was born from a deep-seated desire to preserve the soul of the Kgalagadi. We believe that heritage is not just about the past, but about the vibrant future we create together. Our journey began with a simple vision: to empower local communities through sustainable tourism and world-class cultural expression.
We are dedicated to fostering sustainable development in the villages of the district. By hosting world-class music and arts festivals, we provide a platform for local talent while ensuring that the economic benefits of tourism stay within the community. Our work is a testament to the resilience and beauty of Botswana's cultural landscape.
Local Impact
This non-profit initiative aims to develop eco-friendly tourism and community empowerment projects across KD1, comprising Ukhwi, Ngwaatle, and Ncaang villages. The vision is to establish an eco-friendly tented campsite in each village, to promote sustainable tourism while preserving the natural and cultural heritage of the region.
Proceeds from the event will support the Village Development Committees (VDCs) in turning this vision into a reality and creating long-term economic opportunities for local communities.
In addition to tourism development, the NGO seeks to empower local entrepreneurs through skills development programmes, including fashion design masterclasses, financial literacy, digital literacy, and basic business management training. These initiatives aim to equip community members with practical skills to create sustainable livelihoods and participate meaningfully in the local tourism and creative economy.
The project also aims to position KD1 as a unique cultural and eco-tourism destination by generating interest among both local and international travelers, encouraging repeat visits, and creating lasting economic and social impact for the region.
